This museum includes 12,000 square feet of exhibit space, a library, and an aircraft restoration and repair shop.

Historic airplanes, photos, documents and training equipment are all included in the museum's permanent collection. A great number of the items from the museum's original displays were donated from the personal collections of members of the Kentucky Aviation History Roundtable. The Roundtable is a local group of aviation enthusiasts, founded in 1978, who first came up with the idea of a permanent aviation museum at the Blue Grass Airport.

As a part of its collection, the museum displays both military and civilian aircraft. Detailing aviation history, the museum houses aircraft ranging from restored barnstormers and vintage airliners, to historic warbirds and flyable aircraft from today.

The Aviation Museum of Kentucky is affordable, informative, educational, and enjoyable. On our visit, when we entered the museum, we were greeted by those who volunteer there. We were given a tour by one of those volunteers, Mr. Reinhold, a veteran of the Korean War. He was very knowledgeable about the different aircraft that was on display. Not only did we learn about the different planes, we also learned how the military incorporated the many different types of planes during wartime. Throughout the tour, we were able to sit in some of the planes and "test them out" others were only to look at due to their age and the delicate nature of the paint. After our guided tour, the children experienced what flight is like through the use of a simulator. As we ended our time there, our son excitedly said, "I definitely want to come here again!"
