Description:Exploring Cranberries:

A Standard-based Discovery of the Social Heritage, Science, and Technology of an Agricultural System.

Online curriculum for 21st Century learning, meets federal and the Massachusetts MCAS standards for grades 3-5, interactive, self paced, teacher and student sections. Let your student exploring the historical development of the cranberry industry in Massachusetts, while learning modern day farming practices. Learn what cranberry growers are doing to be good stewards of the land through innovative and sustainable technologies.

Into The Bog Overview:

Into the Bog is the first of three sections that make up Exploring Cranberries. Throughout this introductory section, students become acquainted with the cranberry, its habitat, its history, and the people involved in cranberry agriculture. Five lessons make up this section. While individual lessons can be stand-alone experiences, the order in which these lessons are organized allows them to build on each other and help students make connections between the lessons.

*Making Sense of Cranberries
*Eco Tours
*A Growers Work Is Never Done
*Cranberry Connections
*Beneath The Bog

Adopt A Bog:

Adopt a Bog is the second section of the Exploring Cranberries program. Unlike the other two sections which contain individual lessons, Adopt a Bog is one comprehensive and cohesive, integrated lesson that unfolds over the course of two to three, 45- minute class sessions. Students’ objective is to choose one bog among three to adopt. Their choice should be guided by their understanding of what makes a successful cranberry bog. To help them make this decision, students are coached by virtual cranberry growers as they investigate critical features of a thriving cranberry bog. After their careful research on the three prospective bogs, student pairs eventually select one to adopt, and receive feedback on their decisions.

Challenges Await You:

Now that students have become familiar with the cranberry, habitat, cultural experiences, history, and its people, they’re ready to face and tackle various challenges cranberries growers typically deal with. This section of Exploring Cranberries offers three distinct scenarios:

*Chill Out
*Bugs on The Bog
*How Do You Bee?

Other engaging opportunities for students to learn, appreciate and virtually practice on their cranberry farm:

*Children watch interactive movies
*Listen to explanations from virtual growers
*Calculate percents for blossom
*Children become a grower by choosing one of three bog locations
*How computers and the internet help manage cranberry bogs
*Learn when temperatures will damage tender buds
*Understand frost for thresholds tolerances
*Click and drag certain work tasks to the proper season
*Learn how growers dry and water harvest their cranberries
*Understand the importance of certain natural resources

Enjoy!
