Description: | The Historical Society's museum division preserves a wide variety of objects in many media, all made, used, owned, or collected by Delawareans. From a unique Revolutionary War flag captured by a British officer in Delaware to the flight jacket owned by a Delaware fighter pilot who shot down four enemy planes during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, from a chair once owned by George Washington to homemade "hippy" furniture of the 1960s, from paintings and prints to silver and ceramics to clocks and clothing, they collect and interpret it all, right up to the twenty-first century. A small percentage of these treasures is on display in Distinctively DelawareTM, their permanent exhibit on the history of the state. Many more furnish the historic Federal mansion, the Read House (built 1801), in nearby New Castle, Delaware. Large groups of items from the collections often form the basis of temporary exhibitions, scheduled throughout the year. |
