Description:

A restored 19th century village. The Nassawango Iron Furnace was started in 1829 near Snow Hill, MD. The Village of Furnace Town developed in support of smelting iron. After it went bankrupt in 1850, the village was lost to the forest until a presvervation group began work in the 1960's.

This village is a nice collection of restored period buildings, living history reenactment and ongoing archaeology digs.

This is one of many 19th century restored villages we have visited and we loved it. You get a real sense of going back in time when you walk the grounds. The unique history of this place - with its grand furnace - is a great history lesson. The living history interpreters really knew their stuff (those on the loom were outstanding). The nearby town of Snow Hill is charming and a nice spot to stop for a bite.

We love history and took this field trip in the summer just for the fun of it! This is a living history museum where friendly people dress the part and perform jobs from the past. It's fairly small so it doesn't wear out the children, there are shaded areas for hot summer days, it has a nice gift shop and lots of free worksheets homeschoolers may use. It is not crowded - it is in a rural part of Maryland. They do have various special activities throughout the year although we did not get to any. Be advised they are open seasonally.
