The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a great place to visit. Growing up in New York City it was one of the places I frequented especially while studying art in high school & college. The price to enter the museum is "suggested" so you don't have to spend big bucks to visit the many and interesting exhibits that the Met has to offer. You can get in for a mere penny if you wish to do so (although according to their website "To help cover the costs of exhibitions, we ask that you please pay the full recommended amount."). There's no excuse not to visit even if you are on a budget.
