The people who work here are friendly and very knowlegeable about archeology and the Hohokam people who once lived on this very spot centuries ago. The indoor museum exhibits are nicely done but not extensive; the children's gallery has interactive & hands-on components. I would recommend planning or going with a group of homeschoolers to combine a tour of the museum (exhibits & outdoor preserved ruins & ball court) with a beginning archeology & simulated dig where students actually uncover real & simulated artifacts. If this is not feasible--go during one of their family festivals often held on a Sat. afternoon--there are usually several cultural agencies present that add more hands on activities for students to do. Another way I would encourage homeschoolers to do here--send your students to the 4 day summer or 2 day weekend archeology day camps. They are excellent. They even have a storytime for preschoolers for that is excellent! Even if you don't live close, these programs & a field trip here is well worth the drive. (Or call Valley Metro & arrange to ride the light rail for FREE.)
