 | M. Oyler, Co-op Member | The Speed Museum is a great place to teach older children about art. They do have programs for younger children but I have not yet experienced them. The Speed has artwork of all kinds from many different periods. You could do multiple units in art history and visit a different room each trip. In addition to their permanent collections they also have travelling exhibits. In the past they have had the Gutenburg Bible, letters of Thomas Jefferson, & more. I see something new everytime I go.
I am an art history major & can't wait to add it to my preschooler's curriculum in a couple years. Personally, I have learned more about world history, geography, and politics from my studies in art history than I probably ever absorbed in any of those classes alone. School systems like to cut art programs when money is tight but I don't think they realize just how usefull it is for teaching other subjects. I would have been lost in many classes without it as a child and a college student. The Speed museum is an excellent resource for Louisville area homeschoolers, as well as the community in general, and I am very thankful for it. |
