Reading Unlocked teaches children to read phonetically, not to guess from a picture or from the first letter. It teaches children to read new words, without memorization.
Simplified Phonics™ system is particularly suitable for children with dyslexia or who find reading hard. Reading Unlocked shows how to blend sounds into words.
Starting with words which have three sounds and three letters like dog, Reading Unlocked moves on to words with four sounds and four letters like frog. Next words with three sounds but four letters like goat are taught, then finally mutli-syllable words like baboon and monkey are taught. Initially, only one sound for each letter or group of letters is taught, rather than confusing your child with all the ways English letters can be pronounced.
- Phonological Awareness: Lots of auditory exercises are provided, as this is a crucial pre step to learning to read. Can they identify the first sound in a word? The last sound in a word? Can they hear the difference between ship and sheep?
- Abstract Words: Reading Unlocked teaches abstract words like the and was in whole sentences, to make them easier to remember.
- Poems: Each lesson finishes with a poem for you to share with your child. Words that your child can read are highlighted in red. As you go through the lessons your child will be able to read more and more of each poem.
